Are you an explorer with the drive to discover Jewish music from
Tangiers to Timbuktu? Have you always wanted to make howling, clicking,
glottal sounds but hesitated because you could not figure out their
Jewish context? Wait no longer! Led by Charming Hostess, participants
in this workshop will sing Jewish songs from around the world, with
special attention paid to the extended vocal techniques from the
Balkans to Brooklyn. |

Diaspora
Vocal Traditions: Songs
So, you’re hip to Jewish music, but you just want a little
more…RYTHYM. Charming Hostess has just what you’re looking
for! Led by Nir Waxman, this workshop will teach you the basics
of beatboxing—vocal percussion based in the hip-hop tradition.
Nir will start from the beginning, emphasizing breath control, sound
production, and compound beats from simple parts. He will also address
building songs from the beatbox up. |

Currents
in Israeli “New Music”
Where is the radical fringe of Israeli musical culture? Who represents
the Tel Aviv avant-garde? Which composers, venues and bands should
you check out? What is Levontin7? HolyLand Charming Hostess will
introduce you to the weirdos of Israeli music, focusing on the acclaimed
but obscure. You will hear ambitious music from Tel Aviv’s
best and brightest (Giv’ol Choir, Roy Yarkoni, Kruzenshtern
& Parahod, Dropkin), accompanied by its historical, musical
and cultural context. |
